The first in a series of short films Red Bull Music Academy commissioned from m ss ng p eces, this is the definitive short film about iconic NYC music label DFA Records. Narrated by Marc Maron, it features music and appearances from James Murphy, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Holy Ghost!, The Juan MacLean, Shit Robot, Sinkane, YACHT and many more.

DFA defined the sound of the ’00s with a succession of releases that took disco’s rhythmic template, punk’s rebel energy, new wave’s avant humor and created something entirely new. With unprecedented access to the label’s NYC headquarters, the bands and James Murphy himself, “Too Old To Be New, Too New To Be Classic” tells the story of how the imprint went from fledgling indie imprint to respected institution. Along the way you’ll get to see label manager Jonathan Galkin’s championship juggling, Gavin Russom and Matt Thornley’s jam-packed studios and James Murphy being… James Murphy. Stand Clear of the Closing Doors wins at Tribeca!

Sam Fleischner’s beautiful feature film, Stand Clear of the Closing Doors won a Special Jury Mention at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Stand Clear of the Closing Doors is a moving portrait of New York, told through the parallel journeys of a 13-year-old autistic boy and his mother. The film was shot almost entirely on the subway and in Rockaway Beach – before, during and after Hurricane Sandy.

Tribeca Film Festival’s Prequel series went behind-the-scenes with Sam to learn how he cast Jesus Sanchez-Velez in the lead role of Ricky, and how he had to rewrite his Rockaway-set film to incorporate Hurricane Sandy when the storm closed in on the city in the middle of filming. Watch it here:

We are thrilled to announce our first-ever roster of directors. These six forward thinking storytellers represent the next wave of world-class filmmaking talent. Read more on Creativity!

When we started m ss ng p eces seven years ago, the first video iPod and YouTube had just launched, and we saw the digital video revolution as an opportunity to seek new forms of visual storytelling. Since then, likeminded talent has come here to break new ground in storytelling, from television commercials and branded content, to feature films and interactive video.

Our team has worked with some of the world’s best agencies – including Ogilvy, BBDO, Saatchi & Saatchi, Razorfish, and Mother – and some of the most recognizable brands – American Express, Levi’s, TED, Vimeo, GE, Google, and the Climate Reality Project – and has created documentaries, feature films and music videos such as King Kelly, Panda Bear, Chairlift, MGMT, and more. The time is right to announce our cherished roster of talent.

The incredible filmmakers that challenge the status quo to create meaningful, engaging pieces include:

Josh Nussbaum has directed seminal stop motion commercials for Levi’s and GE, and the short documentary Behind the TEDTalk. He has worked with Alex Bogusky on Silver Lion-winning spots for The Climate Reality Project, and directed branded content series for Toyota and GE . In his past life, Nussbaum was awarded an Emmy for prime-time documentary television programming (MTV) and collaborated with Barry Levinson on The Bay as his cinematographer.

Director Sam Fleischner. His second feature film on the horizon, Sam caught our eye in 2009 with his award-winning debut feature Wah Do Dem. Since then, he’s worked with Ogilvy on American Express’s Twitter Sync program, created branded documentaries for Intel & Samsung, and music videos for Santigold and Panda Bear.

Director and Interactive artist, Jordan Fish is a close collaborator with MGMT, Das Racist and Chairlift, for whom he made the revolutionary “choose-your-own-adventure” music video that pushed the medium forward—and was just named Buzzfeed’s #1 Music Video Of 2012.

Dark Igloo is the directing/designer/illustrator duo Mark Richard Miller and Dave Franzese. Their design and video work was recognized as part of this years ADC Young Gun’s X class and has been commissioned by diverse brands like Pop! Tech, GE, Google, and Bonnaroo.

Director Andrew Neel is an award-winning feature film director, whose work ranges from documentary to innovative narrative formats. From documentaries such as, Darkon, Alice Neel, and New World Order, to his critically acclaimed new feature, King Kelly, his work has screened at top festivals around the world.

Scott Thrift is the founding director of m ss ng p eces and responsible for its name. He created Cool Hunting Video, RESET, a series for Sundance, and the 2012 awards film for the Tribeca Film Festival. When he’s not making films Thrift is working on other creative endeavors like his most recent project: ThePresent, the first-ever annual clock that tells the time in seasons, which is quickly becoming a global sensation.

Both Thrift and Nussbaum are partners at m ss ng p eces, along with executive producers Kate Oppenheim and Ari Kuschnir.

The announcement comes along with our new website, which features the directors, and our work in branded content, commercials, interactive video, music videos, design and original projects.
